Black Folks

by McCutcheon
I liked the black folks in the dark bar
At least the bull-shitters
who never let the truth get in the way of a good story

They knew the importance of entertainment;
when all you want to do is get drunk and talk,
people were the same-
anyway that’s how I saw it

The educated and political blacks
I had no time for
They would come in to use the phone
putting together a magazine

I could see they hated me,
feel the rage in their eyes on my pale skin.
They were too upset about the injustice done to them

So, I drank with my friends,
who told me obvious lies.
I thought we were the same,
passing time with bottles

Only they understood we would never be-
Equality is truth not a story.
